The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers to take a drug that is used to treat pain, swelling, or stiffness and to stop it if you develop a rash.

The drug Voltaren is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that was originally developed as a treatment for arthritis. However, the FDA has not approved it for use in children under age 12. The medication is available in the U. only, and has not been approved for use in the United Kingdom.

The FDA said it is working with the manufacturers of the drug to develop a treatment for children ages 2 to 11 that combines the effects of two drugs, diclofenac and ibuprofen, at a lower dose than the usual adult dose.

A study was completed in July to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the drug. The results could be published in a year's time in the Journal of Pediatrics.

It is not yet known whether the treatment would work in those aged 12 or younger, but doctors will now have to conduct a test on each patient.

The drug is also being studied for uses other than treating pain.

The FDA has not approved Voltaren to be sold in the U. S., but its maker, GlaxoSmithKline plc, has said that it is working with the manufacturers to develop a treatment for children ages 2 to 11 that combines the effects of two drugs, diclofenac and ibuprofen, at a lower dose than the usual adult dose.

The medication is also being studied in other countries.

U. pharmacies will be able to sell the drug without a doctor's prescription in the U. if a patient meets certain criteria, the FDA said.

The drug's label will be updated on Thursday, and the drug's maker will continue to market it as a cheaper alternative to Voltaren.
